Does Canned Pumpkin Puree Need to Be Cooked?

No! Canned pumpkin puree is made by steaming and pureeing pumpkin, meaning it’s already cooked and is safe to eat straight from the can. That said, I don’t recommend eating it on its own as it doesn’t taste all that great plain.

Should I Drain My Pumpkin Puree?

If you’re making homemade pumpkin puree, you might need to strain off any excess liquid. However, this usually isn’t necessary with canned varieties, as they’re pretty thick.

What’s the Difference Between Canned Pumpkin and Pumpkin Puree?

There isn’t one! Canned pumpkin and pumpkin puree are just two ways of referring to pure, unsweetened pumpkin puree. The only ingredient listed on the can will be pumpkin. When buying canned pumpkin, be sure not to confuse it with pumpkin pie filling which is usually sweetened and contains several added spices.

How to Store Leftover Pumpkin Puree

You can store any leftover pumpkin puree in an air tight storage container in the fridge for up to a week. I like to use a canning jar or a glass Tupperware container with a tight lid. You can also free leftover pumpkin puree for up to a year.
