Sweet and Creamy Cottage Cheese Overnight Oats
If you’ve been around ATHT for a while, you probably know that I love overnight oats. I make a batch at least every other week. Recently, I jumped on the cottage cheese train with recipes like these egg bites with cottage cheese, cottage cheese ice cream, and my herby cottage cheese dip so I thought I had to give cottage cheese in my oats, too!
Turns out, it’s delicious! Don’t worry if you don’t like the texture of cottage cheese. I blended everything up to create a smooth liquid base so that the oats turn out creamy and not lumpy.
Not only is this recipe delicious, it also packs a punch of protein to keep you feeling full all morning long!
Why I LOVE Overnight Oats
- Easy to make – just add the ingredients to a blender, mix, and chill. You can prepare a large batch to enjoy throughout the week.
- Nutritious – this recipe is packed with all the best things like fiber, healthy fats, and protein!
- Easy to customize – the cottage cheese has a neutral flavor, meaning you can mix and match a variety of toppings and mix-ins to switch up the flavor and make it your own.

Recipe Ingredients
Cottage Cheese: you’ll need ½ cup of cottage cheese for this recipe. I prefer to use low-fat cottage cheese, but whole milk will also work.
Almond Milk: unsweetened almond milk is always my liquid of choice for overnight oats, but you can use any plant-based or dairy milk you like best.
Vanilla Extract: this enhances the sweetness and adds delicious vanilla flavor.
Sweetener: you can use either maple syrup or honey to sweeten these oats. Or, feel free to leave it out completely!
Old-Fashioned Oats: if you need to keep this recipe gluten free, be sure to use certified gluten free oats.
Chia Seeds: these help give the oats a thick creamy texture.

Ways to Customize
I kept this recipe fairly simple, but you can definitely enhance the flavor with different mix-ins! Try adding options like:
- Cocoa powder
- Cinnamon
- Fresh or frozen fruit
- Almond extract
- Nut butter like peanut butter, cashew butter, almond butter, or pecan butter

How to Make Cottage Cheese Overnight Oats
Step One: Add the cottage cheese, almond milk, vanilla extract, and maple syrup to a blender. Blend until smooth.
Step Two: Transfer the cottage cheese mixture to a mixing bowl. Then, fold in the oats and chia seeds. Stir until well combined.
Step Three: Separate the oat mixture into two separate mason jars with lids, cover, and chill overnight.
Step Four: After the oats have chilled, remove them from the fridge, and give them a stir. Add a splash of milk as needed if they’re too thick for your liking.
Step Five: Top the oats with fresh berries, and enjoy!

Topping Ideas
You can always serve these cottage cheese overnight oats on their own. However, I love to serve mine topped with sliced almonds and fresh berries like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries.
Or, add options like:
- Nut butter
- Sliced bananas
- Chia seeds
- Hemp seeds
- Shredded or flaked coconut
- Sliced nuts
- Fresh fruit jam
- Chocolate chips or cacao nibs
- Whipped cream
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do overnight oats with cottage cheese last?
This recipe will stay fresh in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 to 5 days. While they will still be good to eat after a few days, know that the texture of the oats may change as they soak up more liquid. I like to make a batch to enjoy for two or three days and then make another instead of doubling the recipe and eating off of it all week long.
Do you eat overnight oats hot or cold?
Overnight oats are typically served cold, straight from the fridge, especially when they’re made with dairy like cottage cheese or yogurt!
Can I microwave cottage cheese overnight oats?
Yes, if you prefer warm oats, feel free to transfer them to a bowl, and heat them in the microwave. Add an extra splash of milk as needed to loosen them back up.
