Slider Ingredients

Hawaiian Sweet Rolls: the flavor and texture of Hawaiian sweet rolls is the perfect base for these sliders. They’re soft, fluffy, sweet and are the best pair for the ham and cheese.

Ham: you’ll need around three-fourths a pound of ham for these sliders. You can use sliced deli ham or go with leftover baked ham from a holiday meal!

Cheese: for these sliders we’re using a generous amount of Swiss cheese which pairs really well with the ham.

Poppyseed and Minced Onion: the top of these sliders are covered with a poppyseed and minced onion mixture that adds even more flavor.

Easy Hot Honey Mustard Sauce

I firmly believe you can’t have a good slider (or any sandwich!) without a good spread and these sliders have a delicious and easy to make honey mustard sauce that pairs perfectly with the ham and Swiss cheese combo.

Here’s what you need for the sauce:

  • mayonnaise
  • dijon mustard
  • hot honey
  • paprika
  • cayenne pepper

How to Make this Ham and Cheese Sliders Recipe

Step One: Turn the oven to low broil. Slice the Hawaiian rolls in half and place on a lined baking sheet. Toast the halves, cut side up, for 1-2 minutes, watching carefully, until golden brown and toasted. Remove from the oven and then lower the oven temp to 350 degrees.

Step Two: add the mayo, mustard, honey, paprika, and cayenne pepper to small mixing bowl. Whisk together until well combined.

Step Three: Brush the honey mustard sauce on both sides of the toasted rolls. Then on the bottom half of the rolls, place 6 slices of cheese, then layer the sliced ham, and then top the ham with the remaining 6 slices of cheese. Then, place the top half of the rolls over the meat and cheese.

Step Four: Stir together the olive oil, poppy seeds, and minced onion. Brush the mixture over the top of the rolls and then cover the sheet pan with aluminum foil. Bake the rolls, covered, at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

Step Five: After 10 minutes, remove the foil from the sheet pan and bake for additional 10-15 minutes until the cheese is fully melted and the rolls are golden brown and toasted on top.

Step Six: Top with fresh chives and then cut and serve.

Ways to Customize

  • Switch up the cheese – don’t love Swiss cheese? Use your favorite cheese instead! Cheddar or gruyere are both my favorite substitutes.
  • Use butter instead of oil – swap the olive oil used in the poppyseed topping for unsalted butter if you prefer.
  • Double the recipe – need to make a few more sandwiches for a larger party? swap the 12 standard sized rolls for 24 smaller rolls instead for more smaller sandwiches. If you’re really trying to feed a crowd, you can make a double batch of 12 or 24 rolls!
  • Use your favorite sandwich sauce – swap the hot honey mustard for your favorite sandwich sauce instead.
  • Swap the protein – don’t love ham? this slider recipe can easily be made with sliced turkey or chicken.

Tips and Tricks for the Best Hot Ham and Cheese Sliders

  • Watch the rolls carefully while toasting – sweet rolls can burn quickly in the oven (I know from experience) so keep a very watchful eye on them. I recommend setting the oven to a low broil for the best results.
  • Up the protein – want a heartier sandwich? add a bit more ham to the sandwiches to make them even more substantial. The amount of protein listed in the ingredients is really just a suggestion so measure with your heart.
  • Line your sheet pan with parchment paper – to make cleanup extra easy don’t skip this step.

The Best Way to Store and Reheat

These sandwiches are best served on the same day but they can also be pretty tasty when reheated. Here are best tips for storage and reheating:

Store: you can store any leftover sandwiches in an air-tight storage container in the fridge for 1-2 days.

Reheat: if you want to warm the sandwiches up a bit, I recommend doing so in a 350 degree oven for 5-7 minutes, wrapped in aluminum foil. If you’re in a pinch, you can reheat in the microwave at low power for 15 seconds at a time.

What to Serve with Your Sliders

These sliders pair perfectly with so many different sides so you really can’t go wrong. If you’re looking for a few sides to serve with your sandwiches here are a few of my favorite options:
