What Is The Best Cut Of Steak To Use?

The best cut of steak to use for this recipe is a tender cut with not much visible fat. My personal favorite cut of steak to use is top sirloin.

The meat is tender, easy to cut into bites, and is not marbled with a lot of fat which makes it a great choice for this recipe. New York strip steak, tenderloin, or rib eye would be a few other great options.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Steak: Cut the steak into bite size pieces, roughly one-inch cubes. Try to cut the steak into even sized pieces so that they cook evenly.

Butter or Ghee: If you are using butter for this recipe, I highly recommend using a pasture-raised butter like Kerrygold because it will have more flavor. If you prefer, ghee will also work well for this recipe.

Fresh Garlic: This recipe is called garlic butter steak bites for no reason. Cloves of fresh garlic give the steak so much flavor.

Salt and Pepper: A simple and classic combination that adds so much flavor to steak.

Parsley: Fresh parsley works best but if you don’t have any feel free to leave it off or use dried.

Green Onion: For garnish and to add even more flavor.

Red Pepper Flakes: Adds a little spice! If you do not like spice feel free to leave this ingredient out.

How To Make Garlic Butter Steak Bites

Step One: Cut the steak into one-inch bite size pieces and then season with it with the salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes.

Step Two: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and then add avocado oil to the hot skillet. Next, add the steak, in a single layer, to the pan. Cook the steak bites for three or four minutes until brown, stirring occasionally. You may have to do this in batches depending on the size of your skillet. Once the steak is brown, remove it from the pan.

Step Three: Remove any excess water from the skillet and then add the butter or ghee to the pan. Next add the minced garlic and saute for one minute.

Step Four: Next add your steak back to the pan and cook for one to two minutes. While the steak is cooking, stir to coat it in the garlic butter sauce. After the steak is finished cooking, remove the pan from the heat and stir in the chopped parsley. Garnish the steak with sliced green onion and serve immediately.

Recipe Tips and Variations

  • Add extra veggies – you can easily customize this recipe by adding in some quick cooking vegetables before sautéing the garlic. Zucchini, bell peppers, and thinly sliced onion will all work. Just add the veggies (and a little oil) to the skillet after removing the excess water from the pan but before adding the butter. Sauté the veggies for a few minutes until tender crisp, then remove from the pan, and continue with the rest of the recipe. You’ll add the veggies and steak back to the pan at the same time.
  • Use fresh garlic – fresh garlic really is best for this recipe. If you want to save a little time you can use pre-peeled garlic!
  • Use chicken thighs – don’t want to use beef? try swapping it for boneless skinless chicken thighs that have been cut into pieces.

How to Serve

You can serve these steak bites with just about anything! Here are a few suggestions:

How to Store and Reheat

I have found that the best way to reheat these steak fajitas is in a skillet. Just a few minutes in a hot skillet will ensure that both the steak and veggies are evenly heated through. Of course, you can always reheat your fajitas in the microwave. Just be careful not to leave them in there for too long.

  1. Dinner hit tonight that is in such regular rotation my college kids cook it for themselves away at school! I paired it with garlic lemon green beans and some roasted potatoes from The Whole Cook! Thanks for the tasty recipe!

  2. Delicious! Used Butcher Box steak tips so my pieces were not all the same size but still delicious.

  3. So simple and so easy! My whole family gobbled them up! I will definitely be making these again!

  4. Excellent! Made this in different proportions because I didn’t have enough meat, but it came out perfectly and both my teen girls went nuts for it which really surprised me. Husband was also a big fan. Thank you! Will make again!

  5. Seriously, one of my favorite weeknight meals. It comes together so fast and is really versatile. My favorite is to use the same pan to sauté some mushrooms so they get the butter and steak goodness too. This week I added in some soy sauce at the very end to eat with some leftover fried rice!
    Always delicious and wholesome!

  6. I used this with my Butcher Box stew meat and the family definitely agrees the best way to use stew meat!

  7. Delicious! Didn’t have parsley or green onions, used kerrygold butter and the cut of steak recommended and it was delightful! Came together quickly as promised.

    • I’m so glad you were able to make this recipe work for you, Kristen! The Kerrygold butter sounds wonderful! Thanks for sharing!

  8. So quick and easy. Very versatile too. We used sirloin and served with cauliflower mash. We only had unsalted butter on hand, so we used a little extra salt. Delicious!

    • The addition of the cauliflower mash sounds wonderful, Kara! I’m so glad you loved the recipe! Thanks for sharing!

  9. So, so good!! I added caramelized onions and served it over cauliflower mashed!!

    • Yay! So happy this has become a staple for y’all! Thanks for sharing, Jennifer!

  10. This looks delish! Have you ever made it ahead of time (same day but served later)? I am hosting a bday girls night evening and wondered if I could make this ahead of time and hear back up without loosing the consistency of the steak?

    • Hi Kara! You can if you prefer! If you’re worried about the consistency, I’d recommend cooking the steak bites until they’re medium. That way, when you reheat the steak, you won’t have to worry about it being overcooked. Thanks for your question!

  11. Life changing!! I’ll never make steak any other way. ( until your next steak recipe )
    Seriously the best steak EVER!

    • Haha! Yay! I’m so glad you loved it, Scout! Thanks for taking the time to leave a review!

  12. Delicious! Simple ingredients, great flavor, and easy to make! I will definitely make this again!

  13. This recipe was soooooo flavorful! And it was finished in about 20 minutes, which in my book is a perfect recipe! I used flat iron steak and it was soo juicy and tender. I will be adding this to my dinner rotation. Thank you so much for this!

  14. This was so yummy!! The most time consuming part was cubing the steak I had. I will definitely be making this again!

  15. This was so easy and tasted soooo good! I am not a big steak fan, but I will definitely do this again! We served it with roasted asparagus and a rice medley.

  16. These were SO easy and delicious! The recipe is simple and quick, which leaves room for you to be creative with the additional parts to complete the meal. We served this last night with jasmine rice and roasted broccoli, but I’m thinking of making smaller cubes next week and serving as tacos. DELISH!

  17. Very simple, but delicious! I made this for the first time a few weeks ago and now make it weekly. I always have that one random steak my husband and I rock paper scissors for … but now I just do this and we split it with a ton of veggies! It makes for an inexpensive and delicious meal. Making it tonight and just had to write a review!

  18. This is SO delicious!! I just adjusted my next butcher box order to include steaks to make this again. It is so simple and has a ton of flavor!

  19. I made this for dinner tonight and it was a huge hit! I made steak and chicken because some of my kids aren’t steak fans, and the recipe worked well for both! I will be making this again soon!

  20. So good! I love the little bit of heat from the red pepper flakes. I served this over multi-grain rice. Just delicious!

  21. Made this for my husband and I, we absolutely loved it and can’t wait to make it again. Our almost 2 year old even had some and kept asking for more. Will definitely become a monthly dinner!

  23. So easy and so delicious! Subbed cilantro for the parsley bc that’s what I had. Made a extra garlic ghee and cooked a package of cauliflower rice in that, seasoned with salt, pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, and cilantro, added some spinach that was looking sad, and my bowl was complete! Another wonderful recipe!

  24. I’ve made this twice now and my family loves it. Have added zucchini, red bell pepper and onion for a complete and yummy meal in one pan. So easy and delicious! Thank you

  25. Made this recipe just as it’s written and it was delicious!! Definitely something great to make again and again. Also, cooking steak bites vs a whole steak was much less intimidating to me for some reason – so I much prefer this method over a full steak!

  29. Hi there!
I am trying to print out some of your recipes and there are a TON of pop up ads all over my printed recipe. I don’t know if it’s something you can do on your end, but it’s not happening on other blogger’s sites. Just FYI. I can deal with it if I need to, but it leaves off some of the ingredients and directions when I print it out.
Thanks! Excited to try your garlic bites tonight!

  30. I’ve made this twice now and it’s just insanely good. Literally couldn’t be easier and the flavor from the red pepper flakes and garlic is MWAH! I added fresh chopped asparagus into mine and it’s an awesome combo. Have passed this on to a bunch of friends and can’t wait to make it again!
