Everything You Need to Know About the Key Ingredients

  1. Coconut Aminos: these are a common soy-free substitute for soy sauce in many recipes. They taste very similar to soy sauce but taste just slightly sweeter. You can find them in the Asian aisle of your local grocery, usually near the soy sauce.
  2. Honey: helps balance the tanginess of the sauce and creates a thicker, sticky consistency so that it clings to your protein or veggies. If preferred, maple syrup will also work.
  3. Mirin: this is a Japanese rice wine that creates the sweet, tangy flavor you look for in teriyaki. You can find it in the Asian aisle of your local grocery store.
  4. Sesame Oil: this gives the teriyaki sauce the slightly nutty, toasty flavor.
  5. Cornstarch: this helps thicken the sauce. If you don’t have cornstarch you can also use arrowroot starch.

How to Store

Once cool, transfer leftover sauce to an airtight container and store it in the fridge for up to one week. Or, freeze for up to 3 months.

To use, thaw in the fridge overnight. Then, give the mixture a good shake or stir to redistribute the ingredients.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup coconut aminos
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon mirin

Cornstarch Slurry

  • 2 tablespoons warm water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
