Pancake Ingredients

Eggs: these help bind all the ingredients together. You’ll need two large eggs for this recipe.

Milk: whole milk is my go to for these pancakes but I’ve also used almond milk and oat milk!

Vanilla: a necessity in any good pancake recipe to give the pancakes that delicious hint of vanilla flavor.

Melted Butter: this adds that classic buttery flavor to the batter.

Maple Syrup: you need to add to a bit of sweetness to your pancake batter, ok? just trust me on this.

Flour: all-purpose flour forms the base of the pancake batter.

Baking Powder: this gives the pancakes their fluffy texture.

Salt: just a pinch helps to make sure the pancakes have some good flavor.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Milk – Need to keep these pancakes dairy-free? Use your favorite non dairy milk. Cashew milk, almond milk, or oat milk are all great options.
  • Butter – Keeping with the dairy-free theme, you can replace the butter with a vegan plant-based butter if needed.
  • Maple Syrup – Not a fan of maple syrup? Use honey instead!
  • Flour – You can swap a 1:1 gluten free flour for all purpose if you need to keep the pancakes gluten free.
  • Mix-Ins – you can add extra mix-ins like blueberries, chopped nuts, coconut flakes, or diced banana to the batter if you want some extra goodies in your pancakes!

How to Make Chocolate Chip Pancakes

Step One: Add the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, melted butter, and maple syrup to a large mixing bowl. Whisk together until well combined.

Step Two: Next, add the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt to the wet ingredients, and fold until just combined. Be careful not to overmix the batter! It’s okay if there are a few lumps.

Step Three: Lastly, fold the chocolate chips into the batter.

Step Four: Heat a large nonstick skillet over griddle over medium heat. Once hot, add a little oil to the pan.

Step Five: Next, pour ⅓ cup of pancake batter onto the skillet, and cook on the first side until the edges are set and bubbles begin to form throughout the batter. This typically takes 2 to 4 minutes.

Step Six: Flip the pancake, and cook on the second side for 1 to 2 minutes or until golden brown. Repeat the process until all of the batter has been used.

Step Seven: Serve the pancakes warm with plenty of maple syrup and fresh fruit!

How to Keep Your Pancakes Warm

The trick to keeping your pancakes warm is to use the oven, especially if you’re making a larger batch.

Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit before making your pancakes. Then, when one batch is done cooking, transfer them to an oven-safe dish, and place them in the preheated oven.

This will keep them warm without overcooking them so you can prepare the rest of your pancakes and enjoy a warm meal when you’re done!

Tips and Tricks for the Best Chocolate Chip Pancakes

  1. If you’re not in a rush, let your pancake batter rest for at least 30 minutes before cooking. This gives the flour time to hydrate and helps give the pancake an even fluffier texture.
  2. If your pancake batter is a bit too thick and doesn’t spread out on your skillet, that’s okay! Just use the back of a spoon to spread the batter out a bit in the pan. This will prevent your pancakes from being too thick and allow them to cook quickly and evenly.
  3. Don’t rush the cooking process! Cook your pancakes on low to medium-low heat to ensure the inside is fully cooked and the edges don’t burn. Pancakes take a little patience. So, do not crank up the heat to high. Low and slow is the way to go for the perfect texture.

Serving Suggestions

My favorite way to serve this chocolate chip pancake recipe is topped with maple syrup and fresh fruit. However, you can easily mix and match any toppings you like best! Some of my favorite options include:

How to Store, Freeze, and Reheat

  1. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
  2. Freeze your chocolate chip pancakes for up to 2 months. To do so, let them cool completely, layer them between wax or parchment paper, and transfer them to a sealable bag.
  3. Reheat thawed or frozen pancakes in the oven at 350 degrees or in the microwave in 30-second increments until warmed through.

  1. Hi! Recipe looks great but certainly not healthy by any meals. 268 for one serving is a regular pancake… So many subs could be made to align with your blog title and “about” description.

Hi Natalie! My blog embraces moderation and balance as a part of a healthy lifestyle. There are several other pancake recipes on my site made with swaps like oats, maple syrup, etc. if that’s something you’re interested in! and, since you referenced my “about” page here’s a key part you may have overlooked, “At All the Healthy Things we’re on a mission to prove that eating healthy doesn’t have to be complicated or mean restricting foods you love from your diet.
