8-Ingredient No-Bake Banana Chocolate Chip Energy Balls

The perfect snack!

I always try to have an easy grab and go snack on hand for those moments when hunger strieks, like these peanut butter energy balls and nut-free oatmeal energy balls. So, when I had a few overripe bananas to use, I decided to skip the healthy banana bread and made these banana energy balls with chocolate chips instead!

They turned out soft, chewy, and sweet with a touch of warmth and plenty of chocolate goodness. With simple ingredients and easy steps, I know you’re going to love them! Prep a large batch to snack on, pack in lunches, or to treat yourself when you’re craving something sweet!

A Few Notes About the Key Ingredients

This is an overview of the main ingredients in this recipe. See the recipe card for full ingredients and instructions, below.

  • Cashew Butter: I like to use a creamy store-bought cashew butter with just one or two ingredients or make a batch of my homemade cashew butter. You can swap the cashew butter for creamy peanut butter or almond butter if you prefer!
  • Mashed Banana: use ripe bananas, like you would for a banana bread
  • Maple Syrup: this gives the balls the perfect touch of sweetness. Substitute honey if that’s what you prefer.
  • Oats: use old-fashioned (rolled) oats for the base of the balls. Look for certified gluten-free oats, if needed.
  • Chia Seeds: these add healthy fats and fiber and act as a “glue,” holding the chocolate chip energy balls together.
  • Chocolate Chips: I prefer to use mini dark chocolate chips, but regular-sized or even milk chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, or even white chocolate chips will work. Or, use a combination of your favorites!

How to Make Banana Chocolate Chip Energy Balls

Step One: Stir all the wet ingredients until smooth. Then, add the dry ingredients, and stir to create a “dough.”

Step Two: Transfer the dough to the freezer to chill and firm up.

Step Three: Portion the dough, and roll it into balls. Enjoy!

Ashlea’s Tips and Tricks

  • Be sure to use an all-natural, smooth, creamy, and drippy cashew butter for the best results. Something like a Jiffy or Skippy won’t work as well in this recipe. The dough will be too dry, and the balls may come out crumbly.
  • If you happened to add just a bit too much of the dry ingredients, and the dough seems a bit too dry, try adding a tablespoon of extra cashew butter! Or, if the dough is too wet, add extra oats until it holds its shape.
  • Let the dough chill a bit before scooping and rolling. I find this makes it much easier to form the “dough” into balls.
  • A cookie dough scoop is the easiest way to scoop and roll these balls. Trust me.

How to Store and Freeze

Fridge: Store these banana chocolate chip energy balls in the fridge for up to a week to keep them fresh.

Freezer: My preferred method of storing these balls is in the freezer. They freeze incredibly well in a freezer-safe storage container or bag and stay fresh for up to 3 months.

To freeze the balls, place them on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper and then place the sheet pan in the freezer for 30 minutes to harden a bit. Next, transfer the balls to a freezer-safe storage bag or container. When you are ready to eat, grab a bite, and let it thaw at room temperature for just a few minutes before digging in.
