Ingredients You Need

Plain Greek Yogurt: For the best flavor and texture, I prefer to use whole milk Greek yogurt in this recipe. I’ve tried using fat free or low fat yogurt and while they taste ok, I think that whole milk yogurt works best. Full fat yogurt will give the tzatziki sauce that thick and creamy texture that you know and love.

Cucumber: For this recipe you want to use a seedless (often called English) cucumber. These cucumbers have a thin and less bitter skin than regular cucumbers, plus there are no seeds to deal with. Because it has a high water content, you want to place the grated cucumber in a kitchen towel and gently squeeze it to release as much water as possible. Taking a few minutes to do this helps to prevent your tzatziki from being watery.

Garlic: One or two cloves of fresh garlic are all you need for this recipe. For the best flavor, you need to use freshly minced or grated garlic instead of the jarred stuff. It really makes a difference. To make things easier you can use a small or grater or garlic press to break down the garlic cloves.

Olive Oil: Be sure to use a high quality olive oil that you really enjoy the taste of eating for this recipe.

Lemon Juice: Adds even more bright flavor. Be sure to use fresh juice for the best taste!

Fresh Dill: Plenty of fresh dill is what helps to give this sauce it’s bright herby flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will homemade tzatziki sauce last in the fridge?

The tzatziki sauce should last about three to five days in the fridge. Be sure to store it in an air-tight storage container in the fridge for safe keeping.

Why is my tzatziki sauce watery?

This is likely because you did not squeeze enough water out of your cucumber before adding it to the yogurt. To fix a watery tzatziki you can try adding a few more spoonfuls of Greek yogurt.

Can I make a dairy free version of this sauce?

Yes! If you have a dairy allergy or intolerance, feel free to use your favorite Greek-style dairy-free yogurt instead.

Can I use dried dill?

If you do not have any fresh dill, you can use dried dill as a last resort. For every three teaspoons of fresh dill, use one teaspoon of dried. This recipe uses around twelve teaspoons of fresh dill so you can use one tablespoon of dried dill in its place.

Can I add extra herbs?

Yes! Feel free to add some fresh chopped mint if you enjoy the flavor.

Can I make tzatziki ahead of time?

Yes! I think tzatziki tastes even better after it sits for a bit so, feel free to prep the sauce in advance if needed.
