The Best Air Fryer French Fries

No one can resist a delicious crispy french fry. They are perfect for dipping and make a yummy side dish for almost any meal.

These crispy homemade air fryer french fries are so easy to make and a much healthier option than traditional fries. The air fryer makes the potatoes nice and crispy without much oil and in a short amount of time.

All you need for this recipe is potatoes, a little oil, and salt to make this crispy fry goodness!

Are Air Fryer French Fries Healthy?

Yes! Out of all the ways to make french fries, cooking them in the air fryer is one of the healthiest methods. The air fryer gets these fries nice and crispy without much oil which makes them a much healthier option than traditional frying.

To ensure that these fries are the healthiest they can be, use a high quality oil like avocado or olive oil. If you want to step outside the box, you can also try using melted ghee, bacon fat, or duck fat for a different flavor.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Russet Potatoes: I have made french fries and crispy potatoes with a variety of different kinds of potatoes and russet potatoes, hands down, always yield the crispiest results.

If you do not have russet potatoes on hand or just want to use another variety of potato, feel free, just know that your fries may not be as crispy.

Oil: Because these potatoes are made in the air fryer, they require very minimal oil.

You only need a teaspoon of oil to cook the potatoes and a few more teaspoons to drizzle over the fries after they are fully cooked.

Salt: This is the most common ingredient used to season french fries and it is a must! For the best results, do not season the potatoes with salt before cooking.

Sprinkling on the salt after the potatoes have fully cooked will help them to be more crispy.

How To Make French Fries In The Air Fryer

Step One: First, wash your potatoes and pat them dry with paper towels.

Step Two: Once the potatoes are dry, cut them into ¼ inch thick sized fries. Try to cut each fry around the same thickness. This will help the fries to cook evenly.

If you would like, you can cut the potatoes into larger sized or thicker fries. Just know that they will take a bit longer to cook in the air fryer so you will have to adjust the cooking time.

While you are slicing the potatoes into fries, preheat your air fryer to 400 degrees.

Step Three: Next, add the potatoes to the air fryer basket and drizzle with one teaspoon of oil.

Step Four: Give the air fryer basket a shake and then cook the fries at 400 degrees for around twenty to twenty five minutes or until all of the fries are nice and crispy.

Give the air fryer basket a shake a few times while the fries are cooking to ensure that all of the fries cook and get crispy.

Adding the oil to the potatoes after they fry will help the seasoning to stick to them better. Next, season the fries with plenty of salt and whatever seasoning you prefer!

How To Make Homemade French Fries In The Oven

Don’t have an air fryer? No problem! You can easily make these fries in your oven! Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Cut your potatoes into fries.

Step 2: Coat the potatoes in 3 tablespoons of avocado oil. For this recipe I prefer to use avocado oil, but you could also use melted coconut oil if you like.

Step 3: Place the fries onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Parchment paper helps to ensure that the potatoes don’t stick which makes them easier to flip halfway through.

Step 4: Bake the potatoes for 30-40 minutes (don’t forget to flip halfway!) at 425 degrees or until they are crispy and golden brown. When they’re finished cooking, toss them in salt and enjoy!

Tips And Tricks For The Best Crispy Fries

  • Cut the fries roughly the same size so they cook evenly.
  • Season the fries with your choice of seasoning after they are done cooking for ultimate crispiness.
  • Keep an eye on your fries and use your discretion when cooking. If they look crispy before twenty or twenty-five minutes, feel free to take them out. If they look like they need a little extra time, leave them in a bit longer.
  • Do not add more than two potatoes to your air fryer basket at a time. If you need to cook a larger amount of fries, do it in batches.

How To Season Your French Fries

The great thing about making your own homemade french fries is that you can season them however you like.

Of course, french fries will always need salt, but after that you can really get creative with your seasoning blends.

Here are a few great seasoning ideas for your french fries:

  • Homemade ranch seasoning
  • Cajun seasoning (like Old Bay seasoning)
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Salt and pepper

How To Reheat Leftover French Fries

Air fryer french fries really taste best fresh and straight out of the air fryer. However, if you need to reheat your fries, the best way to do so is in the air fryer!

Just add the cooked fries back to the air fryer basket and reheat at 400 degrees for two or three more minutes until hot.
