The Tools You’ll Need:

Tahini Chocolate Chip Energy Bite Ingredients

oats, chia seeds, flax seeds, and coconut in a food processor

Tahini: If you have never worked with tahini before these energy bites are a great way to get introduced to it. While it may look like another nut butter it is actually not a nut butter at all. Tahini is made from toasted ground sesame seeds and used commonly in Middle Eastern cooking. It is not sweet at all and has a deep, nutty, earthy flavor.

Gluten Free Rolled Oats: These help to bind everything together for the perfect texture. Be sure to use gluten free old fashioned rolled oats for this recipe and not quick oats.

Chia Seeds: Chia seeds are packed with healthy fats and add a little extra texture and crunch to these bites.

Ground Flax Seeds: Optional but I love the extra nutrition it provides.

Shredded Coconut: Look for a finely shredded coconut that is unsweetened.

Honey or Maple Syrup: A touch of honey, or maple syrup if you need to make these vegan, adds just the right amount of sweetness to balance the flavor of the tahini.

Dark Chocolate Chips: Mini dark chocolate chips add the perfect texture and flavor.

How to Make Tahini Chocolate Chip Energy Bites

Step One: Add the tahini, maple syrup or honey, oats, flax seed, shredded coconut, chia seeds, and sea salt to a the bowl of a food processor.

Step Two: Pulse the ingredients in the food processor just until well combined and a sticky “dough” forms.

Step Three: Next, add in the mini chocolate chips and pulse until well combined.

Step Four: Transfer the dough to the fridge and allow it to chill for 15-20 minutes. Then, using a cookie dough scoop, scoop the dough and then use your hands to roll into balls.

Step Five: Finish off the energy bites by sprinkling a little flaky sea salt on top of each one.

How to Store Tahini Chocolate Chip Energy Bites

Because these energy bites are made with only real food ingredients and don’t have any preservatives, you’ll need to store them in the refrigerator or freezer to ensure that they stay fresh.

My preferred method of storing these bites is in the freezer. They freeze incredibly well in a freezer safe storage container or bag and taste incredible straight out the freezer.

To freeze the bites, place them on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper and then place the sheet pan in the freezer. Once each individual bite is frozen solid, transfer them to a freezer safe storage bag or container. When you are ready to eat, grab a bite and let it thaw for a minute or so before digging in.

Tips and Tricks for the Best Tahini Energy Bites

  • If you are particularly concerned about your bites being gluten-free, be sure to use certified gluten free rolled oats.
  • Want to up the protein content? You can add in a scoop of your favorite protein powder (vanilla, chocolate, or plain would work best) or collagen protein powder.
  • Tahini can sometimes be a bit oilier than nut butter when working with it. Don’t be alarmed if your hands a bit oily when rolling the bites.
  • Switch up the chocolate chips! Don’t like dark chocolate? Use milk chocolate instead. Don’t have mini chocolate chips? Use chunks or larger chips! If you need to keep this recipe dairy-free, be sure to grab a variety of chocolate that is completely dairy free.
  • Because tahini is made from seeds instead of nuts, this is recipe great option for people who have a nut allergy and cannot enjoy traditional nut butter. That being said, if you can enjoy nut butter, feel free to switch out the tahini for another creamy base. Cashew butter, almond butter, or sunflower seed butter would all work really well in this recipe. Whichever nut or seed butter you choose to go with, just make sure that it does not have any added sugars or preservatives.

  1. I just made this and it is amazing! I have a small food processor so I only made a half recipe. They are going to go fast, so good!!

  2. Very good. I skipped the food processor and just mixed them in a bowl, and they still turned out great.

  3. Couldn’t choose between a few recipes for no-bake, nut-free energy balls and decided on this one because I’ve never come across someone with my same name spelling!

These turned out great, and I’m glad to have a good nut-frer base I can riff off of for different flavors!

  4. I LOVE the flavor of this recipe! Reminds me of Halawah. I followed the recipe but it turned out way too crumbly to scoop or roll into balls. Any pro tips for next time or to salvage my crumb pile? 🙂

Hi, Rebekah! I’m so glad you liked the flavor. I would suggest adding a bit more tahini next time if things don’t stick together. I hope that helps!

  5. I made this and the flavor was great!! The texture was a bit more crumbly than I expected though. They were hard to roll into balls..even after chilling. Any tips on what might have gone wrong? I’m wondering if maybe my food processor is to blame and it didn’t get it processed enough to all come together like it should have…either way..they’re delicious!

Hi, Gail! I’m so glad you loved the recipe. I’d recommend adding a bit more tahini next time if things get a bit crumbly. It’ll help things stick together a bit better if you run into that problem again. Hope that helps!

  6. I made a couple of changes – added 1/3 cup white chocolate rather than the dark chocolate – and I toasted some sesame seeds on the stove which I then rolled the balls in. They are so so good! I will definitely be making them again!

  7. These are delicious, and they really do taste like cookie dough, which surprised me! I made these as a post-workout snack, but really they’d make a great anytime snack, or even a healthy dessert! Thanks for a great recipe!

  8. Sooo good! Perfect for meal prep and my picky bf likes them too! Great for on the go or quick snack. Thank you!

  9. Fantastic! Made these today and we are hooked! Made a generous amount, which is great for snacks for myself and my toddler. THANK YOU!

  10. This recipe is incredibly easy to make! These are perfect for meal prep. I added a little collagen protein for a boost as noted in the tips and tricks. I’m so excited to make these as a normal part of my meal prep rotation.

  11. I love these and make them on repeat. Because these taste like cookie dough, yezterday I made a batch, rolled about a quarter of the batch into tiny balls, froze them then added them to dairy free ice cream. Fabulous!

  12. Made these yesterday with my 3 year old. Was a little nervous for some reason about using tahini….but these are AMAZING. My husband said they taste like cookie dough. Sooooo soooo good! Thank you for all your great recipes! YUM!
