The Best Way to Store Strawberries

  • At room temperature: If you are planning to eat your strawberries right away (as in the same day you bring them home) then you can keep the berries out at room temperature on the counter. Just rinse the berries right before you are ready to eat.
  • In the Fridge: Not planning to eat the berries right away? Then it is best to store your strawberries in the fridge to keep them safe. Keeping the strawberries cold and dry is the key to making sure they stay fresh. I like to line the bottom of storage container (these are my favorite) with paper towels and place the berries inside. Cover with a lid and use the berries within seven days.

How to Freeze Fresh Strawberries

If you have an abundance of strawberries and want to save some for later or you plan on using them in smoothies then you’ll want to freeze your strawberries!

To Freeze: Cut the green tops off of the strawberries and then rinse them with cool water. Transfer the berries to a clean kitchen towel and gently pat dry. You can either leave the berries whole or slice them into your desired size.

Transfer the berries to a sheet pan lined with parchment paper and place in the freezer to “flash freeze” until solid or for at least 30 minutes. Lastly, once the berries have hardened transfer them to a freezer safe storage bag. The strawberries will last for up to 3 months in the freezer.

Tips for Keeping Your Strawberries Fresher Longer

  • Don’t wash until ready to eat – keeping the strawberries dry is key to ensuring they stay fresh. Instead of rinsing all of the berries and then storing them, keep them dry and rinse right before serving instead.
  • Leave on the stems and the tops – if you are storing the berries in the fridge, keep the stems and tops on until right before serving.
  • Keep the berries in a single layer – if you can, try to keep the berries in single layer instead of packing them on top of each other. This helps to prevent them from being crushed.
  • Remove moldy berries – check your strawberries daily and remove any moldy berries. Mold can spread very quickly and ruin all your berries so be on the lookout for any strawberries that are starting to go bad.
